"Venus of Moscow"

1998. Bronze. h-62 cm

...I was working on the sculptures "Venus of Moscow" and "Aphrodite of Moscow" at about the same time... Both are based on the same composition principle, drawing upon the antique "Venus"... However, these are two completely different works in terms of internal state, mood, and aesthetics...

..."Aphrodite of Moscow" is an elegant, refined "lady"... "Venus of Moscow" is larger and, in terms of proportions, a mix of "Rubensian" shapes, "Kustodiev’s" pretty plumps and the modern Moscow ironic style...

...She is a bewildered and somewhat frightened swimmer who’s taken by surprise, a "typical" Moscow woman... Defenseless, "nude", goodhearted "woman"... And yet, she is "Venus of Moscow"...
