"Aphrodite of Moscow"

1997. Bronze. h-48 cm

...This is my "playing" with the sound of the names: "Aphrodite of Moscow" is like "Aphrodite of Milos"... It is about playing with the history of art, with the different epochs and forms of plastic arts, with meanings and mixtures of styles...

...In this work it was important to maintain the composition of the classic Ancient Greek Aphrodite, combine it with the elongated, stretched-out shapes of African sculpture, and then try to fill it in with the refined aesthetics of my favorite artist Amedeo Modigliani...

...This mixture and combination of styles, my feelings and aesthetic predilections produced what seemed to me new and beautiful... All this – together with a somewhat ironic but compassionate viewpoint – helped me express what I wanted... And this modern "Aphrodite of Moscow" came out a refined, defenseless and touching person, a true "lady"...
