"The Meditative"

1997. Bronze. h-30 cm.

"The Meditative"… This simple village fellow sitting on a log is a collective image of our Russian character and world-perception, yet he has certain traits of a real-life prototype...
...Having graduated from the Odessa Arts College (before entering the Surikov Institute), I was being contracted to make various sculptural works at collective farms and state farms… That was the time of exciting encounters and impressions, of the formation of my personal view of the world and art (26-27 years of age)… Perhaps I was "The Meditative" myself then…

…I remember my making friends with the village’s orchard warden... He was a wise, kind person with only four classes of education… He used to come to my place and tell me, “…Well now, "scluptor" (the word "sculptor" was too much for him), - the sun is setting and it’s time for us to sit down and have a talk about life and about God...”. It was nice just to sit next to him in silence watching the sunset, listening to the whistling of spring swallows, to the clinking of cicadas, to the singing of village roosters…
